The Aran Islands is a richly unique place due its landscape of Limestone rock, a stretch of cliffs facing the moods of the Atlantic, Large bolders and unusally clean beaches and rock formations. It is also a place steeped in emmense cultural heritage and history. Because the gaelic language is the first language of its residents it is considered the foothold of Irish culture. The Islands are literally a museum of artifacts of religous and cultural importance and there isnt far you can go without seeing something of historical and cultural importance.Below are some of the major attractions:
Dun Aonghasa.
This is a world Heritiage site and is an ancient stone fort overlooking some of the most awe inspiring Cliffs in the country. The glorious sence of the Atlantic which it faces is inspirational
The Worm Hole
This is an unusual natural phenomenum which is shaped in a symetrical rectangle shape and is most interesting in stormy weather as the waves crash in and out of the pool. Also a few minutes walk around from this is a front on view of Dun Aonghasa
The Black Fort.
This Fort set out on an arch of land overlooking a long stretch of cliffs is also a wonderful place to visit. You are likely to find a place where you can feel completling isolated by going to this fort and it's spine tingling atmosphere is often compared to that of Dun Aonghasa
Joe Watties Pub
After a long day of sightseeing and soaking up the atmosphere of the island, its always good to catch some traditional Irish Music. Joe Watties is conveniently located just 20 metres up the road and has traditional muscains playing each night in summer
The Seal Colony
The seal Colony is located just ten minutes ups the road and is a major attraction
The Old Lighthouse
which is located at the highest point of the Island has panoramic views of Galway Bay and every point of the Island. The lighthouse is a great place to sence the full impact of the islands and also to get your bearings.
Kilronan Village
Kilronan Village is a lively spot and is where you can see the comings and goings of daily life. There is often musicians playing on the street and theres a nice beach and harbour where you can look at boats. Theres also plenty of restaurants and bars to suit all kinds of budgets.
